South America Travel: Our Monthly Top Pick

The Latin America For Less Quality Control Team’s Top Pick for June: The Nazca Lines.

A flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines, Peru

A flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines, Peru

A flight over the Nazca Lines is sure to mesmerize any traveler as the mysteries of an ancient civilization unravel under the wings of your plane. The puzzling shapes of the astronaut, the lizard, the monkey, the hummingbird and the magnificent beauty of the Peruvian desert make this an unforgettable experience.

The origin and purpose of the lines remains uncertain. Theories for their use range from them being an astronomical calendar, to landing strips for extra-terrestrial visitors (seriously!)

Either way, I think the lines make an ideal excursion during a Peru vacation, and there are some good value Nazca hotels in the area, my favorite is Hotel Nazca Lines: it’s good value and was visited by Maria Reiche, a pioneering researcher into the lines and the civilization that created them.

The lines are also very close to some other great Peru highlights: Paracas, famous for the wildlife-rich Islas Ballestas, the eerie Chauchilla Cemeteries, and the pisco producing region of Ica.

Enjoy!
