The Sao Paulo International Film Festival is a landmark cultural event that would deserve anyone’s time during a Brazil vacation. Whether or not you’re an avid film buff, there’s bound to be one or two movies that will grab your attention, from a program of almost a thousand screenings.

Held between the months of October and November each year, the festival sees the best of international, independent cinema at over a dozen separate theatres, pulling in several hundred thousand film fans.

Now in its thirty-third year, the festival has become one of Sao Paulo’s biggest events. Many films are English language, or with subtitles, making the festival an ideal attraction for visitors to Sao Paulo, and one that will add many memories to your Brazil travel experience.

Some of this year’s highlights included The Dust Of Time, by celebrated Greek director Theo Angelopoulos and an entire program devoted to Swedish cinema, including films by Hasse Ekman and the Oscar nominee, Jan Troell.

The festival’s opening ceremony took place on 22 October at Sao Paulo’s Ibirapuera theatre, with a special screening of renowned director Ken Loach’s film, Looking For Eric.
