Composed mostly of Ecuadorian Mestizos – the mixed ancestors of Spanish colonists and indigenous Native Americans – the Galapagos Islands are distinct in demographics as it is one the few locations in the world that does not have an indigenous population. A 2006 census estimated that its population at around 40,000 people, all of who live on only five islands of the archipelago: Floreana, Baltra, Isabela, San Cristóbal, and Santa Cruz.
Area: 3,042 sq. miles (7,880 sq. kilometers) of land spread over 28,000 sq. miles (45,000 sq. kilometers) of South Pacific Ocean.
